americans have the right to self-defense. as the court has said to have guns in their homes to protect the families. no one can take away those rights or the guns. second amendment rights are the foundation in which our discussion rests. they are not at risk. but what is at risk are lives, lives are at risk when responsible people fail to stand up for laws to keep guns out of the hands of those who use them to commit murder especially mass murders. i ask we focus our discussion on additional statutory measures to better protect our children and all americans. i say this as a parent and as a grandparent. ours is a free society, an open society, we come together today to learn how to become a safer and more secure society. no one begrudges the government assistance provided to victims of mass tragedies made possible by the law we passed after the bombing in oklahoma city. the bill introduced last week against gun trafficking was similarly proved helpful and i believe it will become an accepted part of the crime control framewor

one of my priorities as secretary of defense has been to remove as many barriers as possible pour talented and qualified people to be able to serve this country in uniform. our nation was built on the premise of this citizen soldier. in our democracy i believe it is the responsibility of every citizen to protect the nation and every citizen who can meet the qualifications of service should have that opportunity. to that end i've been working closely with general dempsey and the joint chiefs of staff who have been working for well over a year to examine how can we expand the opportunities for women in the armed services? it's clear to all of us that women are contributing in unprecedented ways to the military's mission of defending the nation. women represent 15% of the force, over 200,000. they're serving in a growing number of critical roles on and off the battlefield. the fact is that they have become an integral part of our ability to perform our mission. over more than a decade of war they have demonstrated courage and skill and patriotism. 152 women in uniform have died serving this n

. >> just minutes ago, defense secretary leon panetta announced the military will no longer ban women from combat. initially women will be assigned to combat communications, logistics and drivers. gradually they'll work closer to battle as medics and corp.men and operate artillery before becoming combat troops. they would to volunteer and meet the same physical standards as men. whole process would take two to three years. but in reality, women have been serving on the front lines in iraq and afghanistan for the past ten years. as of today, look at this number. 152 female service members have lost their lives, they have been killed in iraq and afghanistan. and at least 958 more wounded. in all, 292,000 women deployed to iraq and afghanistan. joining me now our special panel, a former marine corps captain, executive director of the service women's action network, a woman to file class action lawsuit to challenge the military's ban on women in combat. also military analyst retired army come cell jack jacobs, a recipient of the national medal of honor and michael smerkonish with us. it's
